THE PALO MAESTRO OF WATER & REPTILIAN SPIRITS
Lagarto Caspi is one of the great palo maestro trees of the Amazon: a tree of immense energetic strength, deeply connected with water, with the spirits of reptiles from the physical world, and with reptilian beings associated with the cosmic world.
It can reach imposing dimensions and is often found growing along streams or in areas closely connected with water. Many stories surround the tree, varying across different cultures of the rainforest, because it is not associated with a single spirit. Its energy is compatible with different forces and beings, making Lagarto Caspi an especially powerful and distinctive palo maestro.
In the accompanying video, Maestro Niwen Koshi speaks about the nature of this tree, its connection with water, and the spirits and beings that are drawn to it.
THE SPIRITS DRAWN TO LAGARTO CASPI
The distinctive nature of Lagarto Caspi lies in the fact that it is not associated with a single spirit: it attracts many. Its name refers above all to the lagarto or caiman — the great water reptile of the Amazon — whose spirit is considered to have the strongest connection with the tree. But Maestro Niwen Koshi explains that it does not end there: its energy is also compatible with the spirits of other reptiles from the physical world, such as lizards, snakes and other animals that crawl or climb.
According to the knowledge transmitted by the Merayas, there is also another dimension: that of reptilian beings associated with the cosmic world, understood within this knowledge as extraterrestrial beings.
“The energy of the spirits of reptiles from the physical world and of the reptilian beings of the cosmic realm is highly compatible with the energy of this tree. It is like the favourite tree of those spirits and beings.”
— Maestro Niwen Koshi
In this way, very different forces converge around Lagarto Caspi. The tree acts as a meeting point especially compatible with these spirits and beings, which find in it an energy akin to their own. This connection with multiple forms of energy makes Lagarto Caspi an exceptionally powerful palo maestro.
THE ENERGY OF WATER
Lagarto Caspi has a profound connection with water. Large specimens often grow beside streams, rivers or other waterways; but for the ancient healers, this relationship goes far beyond the place where the tree grows. Its energy is intimately linked to the life force that water represents: water gives life, nourishes and sustains, and the tree shares in that same quality. For this reason, the elders could refer to Lagarto Caspi as a kind of Tree of Life.
However, Lagarto Caspi does not belong to the element of water alone. Its field also brings together the energy of the earth, which provides strength and grounding; the energy of the wind, associated with movement and circulation; and a connection with cosmic energy.
It is precisely this combination of forces — earth, water, wind and the cosmic realm — that gives Lagarto Caspi such a broad and powerful energetic field, unusual even among the palos maestros.
MEDITATION WITH LAGARTO CASPI
In the Shipibo tradition, healers receive the knowledge and energy of the palos maestros through long periods of dieta. Once this relationship with the tree has been established, they can channel its strength in their work with others. But there is also a simpler way of coming into contact with the energy of a palo maestro: through meditation beside the tree.
Around the great Lagarto Caspi at Onikano, beside the water, a space has been prepared where guests can sit quietly and practise a simple meditation: calming the mind and connecting with the energetic field of the tree, seeking above all the energy of the water through the spirit of the lagarto, together with the other energies the tree holds. Afterwards, the practice can continue through a direct connection with the nearby water, allowing its strength to be received as well.
According to Niwen Koshi, the body needs to maintain a good level of energy in order to preserve its strength, balance and vitality. When that energy decreases, states of fatigue, weakness, stress, anxiety or fear, emotional lows, or a sense of darkness and lack of direction may arise.
Meditation with Lagarto Caspi seeks to recharge and nourish the energetic field while also purifying and strengthening it. The Maestro describes this as a way of enhancing the lights of the aura and the magnetic waves of the body, both within and around it. For this reason, working with this tree is understood not only as a cleansing practice — its most characteristic quality is to bring strength where there is weakness, helping to restore vitality, clarity and inner stability.
