CHULLACHAKI CASPI

GUARDIAN OF THE RAINFOREST

Chullachaki Caspi is one of the most important palos maestros in the Amazonian tradition. Revered as the custodian and gatekeeper of the jungle, its presence is invoked in rituals designed to both seek spiritual protection and ask permission to enter — or stay overnight — in virgin rainforest areas.

Whenever one prepares to cross into untouched jungle territory, it is vital to address Chullachaki Caspi, state one’s intentions and request safe passage. This is more than symbolic — it is a form of energetic alignment with the consciousness of the forest.

THE LEGEND OF THE CHULLACHAKI

The name Chullachaki comes from the Quechua words chulla (uneven, unpaired) and chaki (foot), describing a figure with mismatched or asymmetrical feet — one of which is often backwards or shaped like a hoof. This strange feature is the only way to distinguish him when he appears in human guise.

In Amazonian mythology, Chullachaki is a mythical being said to have inhabited the forest long before humans arrived. This ancient guardian is known for his powerful shape-shifting abilities, which he uses to protect the jungle from those who enter with harmful or selfish intentions. He is said to take the form of a loved one, a long-lost friend or a prey animal — luring intruders deeper into the forest until they become hopelessly lost, sometimes permanently. Only those who approach the jungle with clarity, humility and respect are spared from his illusions.

Among the communities who live in the forest, Chullachaki is treated with deep respect, and stories of his presence are still told today. People speak of hearing footsteps or voices where no one walks, or of answering a knock at the door to find no one there. Some describe seeing a familiar face — a friend or relative they knew to be far away, travelling — only to realise later that it could not have been them. Such encounters are always attributed to Chullachaki, and they are taken not as threats but as reminders that the forest is alive, aware and never entirely ours to command.

MASTER OF SPIRITUAL PROTECTION

Though often feared, Chullachaki is not malevolent by nature. He is a protector, a boundary-keeper between the human realm and the spirit world of the forest. In the same way, the spirit of Chullachaki Caspi — the tree that bears his name — embodies these qualities of discernment, guardianship and spiritual authority.

Performing Chullachaki Caspi rituals is both an act of reverence and a practical necessity. These rituals affirm the sentience of the jungle, help to establish a respectful relationship with its spirit world and ensure the protection of those walking a path of healing or learning. Just as Chullachaki watches over the forest, the spirit of Chullachaki Caspi watches over those who enter it — offering protection to those with pure hearts, and warding off those who come with ill intent.

Shamans diet the bark of Chullachaki Caspi to receive its medicine and its protective strength, and to cultivate arcanas — spirit allies that serve as guardians. In shamanic understanding, an arcana is not symbolic, but a real spirit being offering spiritual defence and energetic protection. The spirit of Chullachaki Caspi reinforces the power and presence of the arcana, making it an essential ally in this process. For this reason, rituals invoking this tree are often performed before ceremonies and are especially important for shamans and those engaging in deep healing work.
